The Lightning Gnome Novel

by Justin Romaine

...The wind had died away completely now as the darkness set in. The sky was filled with stars and Galaxies and moons. TLG stared into the water, which was so flat that could see the whole universe, reflected in it. He could also see his own reflection occasionally lit up by the odd splinter of lightning, which also reflected on the underside of his little storm cloud. As he gazed down with his toes touching the water, he felt like he was standing on the edge of the world looking down into outer space. As he gazed deep into the perfect sky he felt as if something was not right with this place. With all its creatures and stars and galaxies there seemed to be something broken or distorted but he could not make sense of this feeling. Maybe it came from the way things happened here...

Welcome!

Thank youbeautiful person for supporting my novel The Lightning Gnome

If youhave arrived at this site, it would most likely be because you have beencoerced in some way via shameless self promotion. But i justify this in thatfact that if you don't engage the media, no one will hear you call.

Myobjective is to engage the community to help me finish my novel. I am just abeginner so i need help and i though a useful medium, would be to give away mynovel as a form of beta program with the aim to encourage feedback anddiscussion on what is wrong with the novel so far.

Please refrainfrom "It's crap" comments as these are not constructive although imsure that some will feel this way, but beta readers so far have certainly allhave bee of that opinion so i would rather wait for more constructive criticism.

Alsoapologise for the shameless Google adsense, but publishing a novel is anexpensive process, so please support my only sponsors (am i allowed to saythat?)

You can Read this novel simply by clicking the links to the right. They refer to the chapters of the novel.

Synopsis

About the Author

I'm not sure if I can call myself an Author. I don't even like books that much and I have had no formal training in writing.
So what qualifies me to write a novel?
I guess I can justify myself to some extent in my love for poetry. Not of the poems you find in poetry books, but of the poems in the lyrics of music.
For over twenty years, as part of my song writing hobby, I have been searching for the holy grail of writing the perfect song. A simple lyric coupled with a simple harmony that amplifies the sentiment in the lyric to produce a powerful emotional response.
One day I thought I was close this grail in a song I wrote called "The Lightning Gnome". Basically, if you can write something that swells your own emotions and inspiration, then others may follow.

Inception

So, with the encouragement of friends andfamily (who liked the recording of the Song), I decided to attempt an illustrated short story of around twenty pages based on the lyrics in the song.
But as I put pen to paper something curious happened. A fever brewed inside me, and the pages mounted.
By the time I had reached fifty I realized that a more substantial work had pulled itself up by its bootstraps, and The Lightning Gnome Novel was born.

Overview

The Lightning Gnome is a novel that follows the adventures of a small creature with a tenuous and unlikely existence known as "The Lightning Gnome" through the infinity of our physical reality both infinitely massive and infinitely small in the search for a cure to a chronic affliction. But what he finds is much more than he expected.

Objectives

  • For the reader to have a jolly good time following a Gnome on amazing adventures
  • To amused the reader with the absurdity of their own physical existence
  • To push the Reader inward andoutward simultaneously into a subconscious imaginary realm of the mind andoutward into the vastness of the Meta universe (Constitution of physical universe)
  • To bring the reader face toface with the question of what constitutes physical reality
  • To make the reader dizzy

Structure

The Lightning Gnome consists of 3 interwoven parallel structural concepts.

1.      A nested narrative layout whichconsists of the Author (Myself) introducing the fictional author (Renaissancealchemist Paracelsus) who relays the adventures of the creature known as "TheLightning Gnome" in the structure of a classic fantasy adventure story. Finally emerging one level at a time, from this hierarchy back to myself the Author.

2.      Internal subconscious structure in which the reader follows the internal an guished search for a missing or fragment of a broken persona in a quest to cure a chronic psychological affliction by reuniting the main character with a suppressed part of his selffound in the darkest depths of main characters subconscious.

3.      External physical reality structure upon which the reader follows the main character on a journey through multiple nested universes to find a distant lost associate who can guide him out of the tenuous existence of his ethereal being.

Style

Philosophical fantasy with Psychedelicundertones (But I never inhaled).
I attempt to create a fictional retrogressive science based on renaissancealchemy thinking but laced with more modern concepts of physics. I also attemptto postulate a relationship between ethics and physics described as naturalethics. This allows us to attribute modern concepts such as Human Rights to allthings in existence and ties free will in with the uncertainty principal.

I also you use a gimmick in the visualdescriptions of the realms to give the visual description a consistency andfamiliarity.

Endnote

I do not expect that this book is finished, but I need people to read it, so I can change it into something more palatable.Maybe even perfect. But certainly, it is not that, yet.Coming Soon!
