The Lightning Gnome Book

Preface

To the Reader
  1. Infinity is a funny thing when you think about it. As a child, I used to stare up at the night sky and the stars and wonder how far it went. But it was absurd to think it would all just stop somewhere. I used to imagine a brick wall at the edge of existence but that made no sense either, because then, all I had was an infinitely thick brick wall, which was just as absurd.
  2. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the universe was infinite and everything in it just went on forever. Why should there be an end; or a beginning for that matter?
  3. However, as I looked into this further I found others who had come to much the same conclusion.
  4. Cosmic Physicists had calculated that there is an exact copy of every person in the world at an average distance of 10^10^29 meters away. This means there is another you 10 with 287 zeros (one hundred  septenquardragintillion), kilo metres away or a 10 with 274 zeros (ten quinquardragintilliard), light years away.
  5. That’s a long way. But you can take this even further. Infinitely further in fact.
  6. So how many copies of you are there? If the universe is infinite, then there would be an infinite number of you. But not only you. Everybody that ever existed would still exist at this very moment somewhere in infinity and infinitely. But not only copies. Also every possible permeation and possible variant of every causal outcome everywhere, all the time, infinitely. And given that our universe may be only a finite one of an infinite number of universes with differing physical laws then the possibilities open yet universally wider beyond which one has trouble imagining what could be possible.
  7. So ? if this is true, then everything that is possible in the infinite universe is happening and has always happened and will keep happening for eternity.
  8. So just when as your head it starting to spin and you are feeling disoriented in your place in existence while trying to read a book about a Lightning Gnome; just to make you even more confused I will now present you with the real author of ‘The Lightning Gnome’ ;)
  9. The story of the “The Lightning Gnome” is actually a lost memoir of the famous Renaissance alchemist, Paracelsus, and although a prolific writer, there is no recording that he ever produced a memoir.
  10. So how did I get hold of it?...

  11. Well, you will just have to read the book to find out.

  12. So from now on, until the epilogue, I present to you, the modern English translation of the lost memoir of Paracelsus, written just before succumbing to heavy metal poisoning in his house in Salzburg, Austria in 1541.
